Understanding How Dental Insurance Works
You might think that dental insurance is like medical insurance – in other words, that it’s primarily meant to be used in an emergency. But while most dental plans do cover emergency care and a variety of restorative treatments, the focus of dental insurance is actually more on prevention. Under most policies, checkups, cleanings, and other preventive services receive the highest percentage of coverage. The theory is that paying for preventive care now reduces the need to pay for restorative services later.
What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers
Dental insurance coverage usually looks something like this:
-
Preventive care is 100% covered. This normally includes checkups, cleanings, and at least one X-ray a year.
-
Basic dental services are 80% covered. One common example of a basic service is a cavity filling.
-
Major dental procedures are 50% covered. This usually includes dental crowns and tooth extractions, but the scope of what’s considered a major procedure will vary slightly from plan to plan.
You can talk to your insurance provider to confirm what kind of treatments are covered under your policy before you arrive at our dental office.
